In Vetenskapens Hus schools, universities and industry meet to give young children and teenagers defined examples of further education, up-to-date research and exciting professional possibilities. KTH and Stockholm University are the two owners of Vetenskapens Hus, with the City of Stockholm as the major partner and financial contributor.

In well-equipped laboratories at AlbaNova, in the lush, green surroundings of Naturens Hus (House of Nature) and during major events in the city, children teenagers and teachers get to meet modern science, mathematics and technology. Jungle mathematics, Grätzel sun cells and Mineral detective are three of more than 100 programs from which visiting schools can chose.

– Visitors meeting us shall experience something new, perhaps surprising – our activities shall be relevant and hands-on, Cecilia Kozma says, Director of Vetenskapens Hus. Our ambition and goal is to increase knowledge, make our visitors interested and curious, in our subjects. Hopefully they will want to learn more and see possibilities for future activities in science and technology. This is of even greater importance considering the most recent PISA report.

There is a number of activities going on in the building. In addition to all visits by schools, the coworkers at Vetenskapens Hus also supervise about 100 high school students in their final year project. Very popular among students and teachers. In 2013 a new activity started – students from grade 7 to 9 can do their PRAO, at Vetenskapens Hus.

– All openings are filled almost immediately, so there is a great interest and we hope to be able to offer supervision to more students in the future, Elin Ottergren says, in charge of the Mathematics programs and PRAO.

Vetenskapens Hus also invites a number of scientists, primarily from KTH and Stockholm University, who give lectures and participate in educational programs for working teachers, inspiration evenings and events focusing on research.

–  We have a close collaboration with active scientists, Cecilia Kozma says, and keep debates and discussions going in areas of common interest.

The Climate Day, during which the most recent ICCP report was presented and discussed, as well as the event for school teachers about the Higgs particle, were very popular. So was the evening arranged within Tekniklyftet, to which Per Kornhall was invited to give his view on the present school system.

ForskarFredag is an example of an event in which a number of universities work together.  This is part of Researcher Night that is arranged at more than 300 places around Europe. Always the last Friday in September. Vetenskapens Hus has the main responsibility for the organization of this event.

– This is one of the major events where scientists meet the general public and it is growing every year, Marcus Angelin tells, project leader for ForskarFredag in Stockholm and vice director of Vetenskapens Hus.

One of the aims of the work at Vetenskapens Hus is to contribute in the efforts to provide Sweden with more well educated people working in Science, Technology and Mathematics. The core of the activities is the more than 100 school programs and some 20 educational programs for teachers working in schools, in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Technology.
