Abstract:
My research focuses on integrating gender studies and evolutionary biology by 1) problematizing the notion of biological sex as stable and fixed, 2) making visible gender stereotypes and heteronormative notions in theory and research practice, and 3)
developing a theoretical framework for understanding the biological sex as variable and constantly changing.
The resulting studies include an analysis of gender bias in genital evolution research, a gender-neutral model of sex in an evolutionary perspective, a critique of the ”sex role” concept in animal behaviour, a review of mate choice flexibility in response to social and environmental factors, and also an analysis of how animal sexual behaviour is explained in Biology textbooks.
My current project concerns what I call “The Female Turn in Evolutionary Biology” and explores how the international evolutionary research community radically shifted perspectives on the role of females in evolutionary biology.
